A fourth shop in Cradley Heath has been ordered to close by Sandwell Council following the discovery of illegal goods being sold from the premises.
Top G's on the town's High Street was ordered to close at Walsall Magistrates Court on Monday 13 July. The council's Trading Standards team secured a two-month closure order after officers found illicit tobacco products being sold from the shop.
Part of Wider Enforcement Drive
This closure is the fourth in Cradley Heath within recent weeks, as Sandwell Council intensifies action against shops breaking the law. The enforcement action was undertaken in partnership with West Midlands Police.
Council Calls for Stronger Powers
Sandwell Council has called for stronger enforcement powers and supports Government proposals to extend the maximum duration of closure orders from three months to 12 months under the Antisocial Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014.
Councillor Bob Jones, Cabinet Member for Environment and Enforcement at Sandwell Council, said the action sends a clear message that illegal activity will not be tolerated on high streets. He confirmed the council will continue working with West Midlands Police and other partners to identify and take action against businesses breaking the law, while supporting legitimate traders.
